Website Guide - Business Hosting |
|
|
What are the main hosting options available for business users?
Website Hosting for Business Users
- There are basically two main options
- Own and operate your own dedicated internet server
- Rent hosting services from a dedicated hosting company
Owner Operated Internet Server
- Gives site owner 100% control of all website activities
- Requires in-depth knowledge of server operating systems, languages and protocols
- May require experienced IT staff and downtime backup facilities
- Can be expensive to operate and maintain services 24/7
Rent Hosting Services
- The most popular rented hosting services for business are:
- Shared Hosting
- Managed Shared Hosting
- Virtual Private Server
- Dedicated Private Server
Shared Hosting
- Inexpensive and very popular with business users, particularly SMEs
- Widely available from a range of hosting companies
- You rent a fixed volume of web space, usually on an annual basis
- Support for high-end facilities like databases and scripting languages is usually more expensive
- Some knowledge of server operating systems may be required
- With this service you share a single IP Address with other websites
Managed Shared Hosting
- Identical to Shared Hosting but server facilities managed by 3rd party
- Site owner does not have to worry about server protocols & systems
- This type of service frequently provided by web designers
Virtual Private Server - VPS
- More expensive but increasing in popularity with business users
- You rent a fixed volume of web space, usually on an annual basis
- Includes a dedicated IP Address - no more sharing with others
- Almost like running your own dedicated private server
- Requires a fairly high knowledge of server systems & protocols
- Web designer may be able to manage VPS on your behalf
Dedicated Private Server - DPS
- Substantially more expensive than a VPS
- You rent a complete server giving you exclusive use
- Usually includes at least one dedicated IP Address
- Requires a high knowledge of server systems & protocols
- May require dedicated IT staff or 3rd Party to manage system
** Note that although some ISPs provide free hosting space with their ISP packages, this type of hosting is not recommended for business users as you normally have to use their domain name on the web and are not allowed to use your own domain. Instead of promoting and using your own, dedicated URL of www.myproductname.com, you will probably have to use www.myISPsname.com/myproductname which does not look very business like or professional.
